For the past few years the creative duo of Kai & Sunny have been trailing a blaze with their work, combining aspects of graphic design, illustration and fashion into their prolific work.
In these times it really pays to be an all-rounder, a head for multidisciplinary output is a must. Being just a graphic designer or just a musician doesn’t cut it when you’re vying with talent that can, and will, sweep the clients away with fingers firmly planted in many pies.
Kai & Sunny have won many awards and many clients, such as Apple, Alexander McQueen, British Airways, Nike and even Kelloggs.
They open an exhibition at the StolenSpace Gallery on Friday June 3rd running until Sunday 26th. The event is called ‘The Flower Show’ as they explore themes of nature in much of their work.
The C.I.A. (Central Illustration Agency) have this to say about them;
“There is something truly inspiring and engaging about the work of Kai and Sunny. The constant challenging and questioning of their own authorial practice has led their work to naturally evolve into a rich and intriguing visual language. Elegant, lyrical, at times unnerving, their imagery is capable of delivering deep narrative structures or simply comforting the viewer with ethereal abstract forms,” said Ben Cox – managing director – Central Illustration Agency.
The first time I became aware of their work was when I picked up literary genius David Mitchell’s seminal book ‘Cloud Atlas’ a few years ago, the duo’s distinct sweeping, natural lines gracing the cover to great effect. Mitchell’s work will feature at the gallery by way of an exclusive new short story ‘The Gardener’, written to accompany the silkscreen flower prints seen here. Kai explains; “We’ve always admired him as a writer, so we approached him. We liked the idea of combining the two.” The story will be on sale as a limited edition box-set with five images that feature in the show.
Kai & Sunny – ‘The Flower Show’, at the StolenSpace Gallery, runs from 3rd – 26th June 2011.
Opening times: Tuesday – Sunday, 11:00am – 7:00pm. Address: StolenSpace Gallery, Dray Walk, The Old Truman Brewery, 91 Brick Lane, London E1 6QL, UK.
